To start - I am a full bike commuter and have been for a decade (in Indy and in ATX) - I have been using BGI Downtown for my e-bike repairs for 3 years now and find them to be reliable and a fair price. Keeping your bike tuned up costs money, that's all there is to it but the people here are very good at what they do, are very knowledgable, and are friendly. I have asked them a ton of questions and when I made the call to buy a new e-bike, they offered me a lot of expert advice. I am very, very pleased with my new Trek bike and give a lot of credit to the people at BGI for that.

We purchased a bicycle for my son’s 8th birthday. It’s a great bike and they gave me great advice on helping my son learn how to ride without training wheels. We are going to take their riding class in match.

Ordered a mountain bike through BGI. Super impressed with the level of communication and service from everyone on the team. As a beginner to mountain bikes they showed me how to make sure I didn’t mess up all the fancy tech that comes with the bike. The mech team is dialed in - checking torque, and making sure it was perfect.

Went in to buy some lights and instead got... gaslit. And no, not in the illuminating way. Here’s the story, in case anyone’s listening, or if the store wants to change (but let’s be real). We’ve already moved on and got our own lights elsewhere. BGI, I used to think we were cool. But this? It was way outta pocket. Sorry for the long post, but hey, it's cheaper than therapy! So, I pop in for some new lights for my wife's and my bikes. My wallet took a sharp inhale when I saw the prices—$140 for a headlamp?! And that’s just for the headlamp, folks. The store guy comes over, and I ask if they have any budget-friendly options, you know, for those of us who don’t bike like we’re training for the Tour de France. We only need lights a few days a month, like when we’re riding that whole mile home from a concert. Not daily commuters. I'm thrilled you’ve got the hardcore gear for the hardcore riders—I mean, you all need that! But I just need a light that, you know, lights up. Anyway, this guy says there’s no cheaper lights… “ANYWHERE IN THE USA.” Um, really? I mention there might be places offering less-famous brands that get the job done. They might not survive a rainstorm or a head-on collision with a moose, but hey, they work. He then tries to convince me that my old $40, 1000-lumen light must have been a lie. “Didn’t have USB charging,” he says. “It did.” “No LED, then.” “Nope, LED.” “If it wasn’t a name brand, it probably lied about how bright it was!” Buddy, that thing could spotlight a mouse at 50 yards! This whole chat turned into a bizarre debate—he was dead-set on proving me wrong. Then, he drops this gem about how I could buy some “China crap” (f, u!) from overseas, but it wouldn’t have the same warranty. So, I asked, “What’s the warranty?” He proudly says, “One year limited, like they always are.” And I’m like, “I could buy four of my old lights, plus a coffee, and still come out ahead!” At this point, I just walked out—dude was clearly more into arguing than helping me out. At some point in this circus, I tried to test out some lights—because, you know, brick-and-mortar stores should let you see what you’re buying. But the lights were dead. I asked if he had any charged ones so I could see how bright they were, and he just says, “Nah, they’re out of juice.” What?! You’re charging quadruple the price, and I can’t even see how it works? What’s the point of a physical store then? I love local shops, and I want to support them. I don’t mind paying a bit extra for a solid product, but when you’re charging 4-8x more, it’s a no-go. I get selling premium brands like Trek, but throw us a bone with an affordable option for those of us who just need a light for occasional use. The cheapest set? $80 for a 200-lumen front and back combo. EIGHTY DOLLARS! For 200 lumens?! That would have been a rip-off 10 years ago, and now it’s just a joke. BGI, I’ve spent a ton here before and usually left happy. This time, I left angry. You had every opportunity to win me over, but you blew it—spectacularly. Do better: offer a broader range of products, and maybe teach your staff that arguing with customers is not a good look.

When I approached BGI, considering entering, a friendly face opened the door and asked if I would like to come in. This encouraged me and I was instantly assisted by 2 attentive individuals. Once my issue was relayed, I was escorted to the work shop and the process of the next steps were reviewed. My bike was promptly taken care of and I am thoroughly pleased with my whole BGI experience!
