Customer reviews for Gearin' Up Bicycles highlight two significant issues: inconsistent operating hours and mixed customer service experiences. One customer reported that the shop was closed during advertised hours, specifically on a Saturday afternoon, and noted that the website was not updated to reflect these closures. They advised potential customers to call ahead to avoid wasted trips.

Another customer shared a negative experience regarding the staff's behavior. They described being treated rudely and feeling unwanted. They also mentioned being refused the bicycle they initially requested and being steered towards a different, less satisfactory option. Despite this, they purchased the bike due to transportation needs and noted that the prices were lower than retail. They also expressed confusion about the staff's behavior, suggesting potential racial bias. The review concluded with an observation of a police car outside the shop upon their departure.

These reviews suggest that Gearin' Up Bicycles may have inconsistent operating hours and potential issues with customer service. Potential customers should be aware of these issues and exercise caution when considering this shop.

As a "Bicycle Shops Near Me" option, Gearin' Up Bicycles is a shop offering bike sales. Due to the reported issues with hours and service, it is strongly recommended that potential customers call ahead to confirm operating hours and be prepared for potential inconsistencies in service. It is also recommended to consider alternative bike shops in the area.

As a previous review noted in May 2023, it is still closed in September of 2024 on a Saturday afternoon at 4:15 p.m. However, the website hasn't been updated. So don't go, unless you call first or like to take excursions in Washington DC.

We're not nice to me at all. Rude, treated me like a roach. Acted like they didn't want to be bothered. I needed transportation so I had to put up with it. Refused to sell me the bicycle that I asked for REFUSED. Suggested another one so I bought it. Paid in cash and gave a nice tip. Bike was not worth it and I was not happy with the choice. I am a tall old black man who looks broke. They were all black except for the boss who was a white man. I will still shop there because it's cheaper than retail. Yet they don't like black people and they have black skin, or maybe they just didn't like me? They liked that tip I left tho, and the easy cash payment. When leaving there was a police car sitting in front of the store???

(As of May 2023: CLOSED for indeterminate time.) Fantastic community bike shop with a great mission to support job training for underserved/at-risk youth and make biking more accessible to the DC area's diverse population. I used it to buy a refurbished road bike (love it, perfect fit, smooth ride), buy new & used accessories (great prices & quality), get adjustments (usually quick/while I wait) and get a tune up (after two years of regular use, rides like new-to-me again). Professional, personable & skilled staff, great prices.

Brought in my bike for a tune up and was not really satisfied with the tune up after riding my bike. I ordered the advanced tune up and I anticipated the bike to handle better. The initial assessment of my bike by one of the employees was that the chain needed to be replaced, the back tire needed to be trued, and the brakes and housing would be readjusted because one of the arms of the brakes was stuck and wasn't working well. Needless to say the only thing that was noticeably different was the chain of my bike. The problem started when I left the bike at the shop. I was told that my bike would be done in 3-5 days, which I was fine with. By day 5, I did not hear any updates so I called to ask about the progress on my bike. An employee told me that delay was caused by my shifters and the possibility of replacement shifters. After discussing that it wasn't entirely necessary, I was told my bike was ready for pickup. That same day, I went to pick up my bike and gave them the order ticket. This lead to confusion why I was at the shop if no one had contacted me. I told them that I had called earlier that day and was told that it was ready. After some discussion in the back by some of the mechanics and reaffirming that I got the advanced tune up without replacement shifters, I received my bike. Finally I took my bike home and noticed the brakes were still not working great. I stopped to check the brakes out and noticed the one brake arm was still stuck. Didn't even bother going back so I brought it to a different bike shop. Right away the mechanic noticed the back tire of my bike was not trued and one of the brake arms needed serious readjustment. The mechanic fixed the unaddressed problems in less than an hour. I really anticipated better service especially for the advanced tune up and essentially paid the advance tune up price just to have the chain of my bike replaced. ***UPDATE**** The bike shop called me regarding my review and I was able to sort things out. Even though my bike wasn't fully serviced I did receive a thorough explanation of the miscommunication that caused my bike to be prevented from being fully serviced. I was given a partial refund and the mechanic that spoke to me was very apologetic about the situation. Very appreciative that the shop reached out to me to sort the problem.
