Customer reviews reveal a significant disparity in experiences:

  • Positive BMX Bike Services: Customers have praised the shop for its expertise in BMX bikes, particularly for children. Rob and his team are commended for their helpfulness, knowledge, and ability to build custom BMX bikes.
  • Significant Concerns Regarding Custom Build Projects: However, a detailed review highlights severe issues with a custom trike wheel build project:
    • Extended Delays and Lack of Progress: The project, started in 2019, remained unfinished after three years, with repeated excuses and delays.
    • Poor Communication and Broken Promises: The customer reported consistent broken promises and a lack of clear communication from the owner's son, who took over the business.
    • Unsatisfactory Work and Additional Costs: The customer was charged for unnecessary parts and incomplete work, resulting in further expenses to complete the project elsewhere.
    • Confusing and Unclear Instructions: The customer reported that the shop's proposed solution for completing the project was unclear and not understood by other bike shops.
  • Contrasting Experiences: There is a clear difference between the positive experiences related to BMX bikes and the negative experiences concerning custom build projects.

Calabazas Cyclery appears to excel in serving the BMX community, particularly for children. However, potential customers considering custom build projects should be aware of the reported issues and exercise caution. The reviews suggest a potential inconsistency in service quality depending on the type of work requested.

If you are looking for BMX bikes and related services, Calabazas Cyclery may be a good option. However, if you are considering a custom build project, it is advisable to thoroughly discuss your expectations and concerns with the shop and consider seeking multiple opinions.

For more specific information on services and to address concerns, it is recommended to contact Calabazas Cyclery directly or seek independent verification.

So in 2019, I’m working on a project trike, and I bought new wheels for my pre-existing hubs. I asked if they could take the existing hubs and put them on the brand new wheels. There was a nice gentleman there that helped me and had initially honored the request. Pandemic hits, and everything closes. Everything became by appointment only, the guy’s son took over, and every time I call, the son says “I’ve got a lot of work to catch up on”, and “you’re next up on my list bro…. call me back in two weeks.” I would call back and the cycle would repeat over and over and over. I was quite patient with this guy…. Seeing as how this was a project and wasn’t in an incredible rush. Second year goes by and in fact, I even went down several times to get the status of the build, and he even managed to upsell me into new hubs… said they would work better, that it would be more stable, etc. etc. etc. blah blah blah… I agree to the new hubs(which I didn’t mind paying for) and proceeds to tell me that he needs more time to complete the build, as he will need to have special work done on the third hub, which is the drive wheel etc..etc. More time goes by, more phone calls for status updates and more excuses…. “I’ve got a plan for this… you’re next up on my list…. Give me two weeks and I’ll have it done.” He even goes so far as to say “the work will be on me, I’ll do the work for free since it’s been so long”. Third year goes by and I’m through with this guy’s blatant lies…. He’s clearly has no intention of finishing the project. I go to pick up the wheels, and sure enough…. He charges me for the hubs(which I had no problem paying for, I’m not looking for free parts) but he also charged me for work on two completed wheels and scribbles some nonsense idea of how I can finish the third wheel if I have a steel wedge made that goes inside the third hub. 🙄👌🏼ok guy. I’ve now taken his idea to three different bike shops, and no one seems to understand what he’s really talking about or why he chose to do it in this manner. I’m going to end up spending another $1200-$1500 bucks just to get the wheels completed, unless I want to scrap the new hubs and start over using the old ones. Basically, I seriously think this guy may be on drugs. Made no sense, didn’t deliver on any of his promises, wasted three years on this project, and to be perfectly honest, I should’ve taken him to small claims. I just don’t have the time, energy or the patience to deal with anyone’s lies anymore. Don’t use this guy. Seriously. Don’t use him. Cars get built in years… not tricycles. If you’re still on the fence as to whether to use this place or not, consider that with as many bad reviews as this place gets, there has to be a degree of truth to all of them. My honest opinion, stay away. Whatever talent existed in this place at one point, is now long gone. The apple has fallen far from the tree. These are pictures from the two wheels that he actually did manage to build, which are decent work, and the video is of him, actually searching for all of my parts, which he had under a gigantic pile of boxes, and other stuff hidden out of sight. 🤡

Calabazas bike shop is fantastic! Our family just got into bmx racing and were struggling to find a bike shop the stocked race bikes until we found calabazas! Rob was awesome to deal with and spent a lot of time answering any and all questions. My 6 year old son had Jr size race bikes that was to big for him so Rob and his team built up a new mini size race bike and made some great suggestions to make the bike better for him and it fits him perfectly! Great customer service and great pricing at calabazas cyclery!

Horrible owner and guys , very rude behavior. He is behaving as if he is owning a tesla showroom and service center. don't even think of going to this guy. very rude behavior. Even its electric bike he doesn't want to repair a flat tire for it. Very Rude behavior to customers. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬.i should have seen the other people rating before walking with my bike for 2 miles to this idiot guys sho). He thinks electric bikes are bad and will ruin his business. yelling at me to move bike out of his shop and telling me i'm stuck with the bike i bought. if he is not able to repair a flat tyre of a bike why he is running that shop.if it is normal or electric its doesn't matter.

Came in Sunday about half an hour after they opened. Despite being slammed, Bob helped me diagnose an issue with the rear shifter (after checking the derailleur with me). He was extremely helpful and courteous and made me feel like he sincerely wanted to help me fix my problem the whole time. They were too busy to take a further look at the bike in the back, but this gave me the information I needed to deal with the shifter issue myself (at least for now). As Bob was finishing up with helping me with the shifter (all the help was for free!), I asked for some tire recommendations and I just finished installing them tonight. Can't wait to go for a ride! (edit: I did NOT buy the bicycle here)
