I have been a long time customer of this bike shop. I should start by saying that I loved bikes. I love bike shops. And I love people who work there. :-) I’ve had a good experience over more than a decade. However, recently the bike shop has gone *really* downhill. I brought my item in. For more than a month, they did not communicate with me. I had to come to the shop, literally four times. They said they were going to call me. And email me. They never did. They did not fix my issue. They did not apologize. They stood me up on an appointment I had made to go over the repair. The lack of communication is extremely frustrating. The lack of an apology is very frustrating. I am bummed. I think this place used to do really good work, but, maybe there’s new management or something? I would consider going elsewhere. I am giving two stars rather than one because of the reputation of the place from five years ago.

My bike is my main mode of transportation, and on my way in to work yesterday in the cold something (my free hub) froze up and I was stuck in "coasting" mode like one of those little kid's bikes without the pedals. With no way to get home (which requires pedaling uphill!) I coasted up all frantic, and these fellas, man. They were cool and calm and yeah, we'll get you back on the road. They had surely better things they could've been doing, but recognized that I was stranded without my wheels and in the most gracious way took great pity on me. Furthermore, bike-abuser that I am, they noticed a bunch of things that were getting close to worrisome that were on my "ugh deal with it eventually" list... chain wear, cassette wearing in, all of that.. I have to emphasize, they noticed these things, but didn't push me to FIX them at their shop. Just "hey, you know this thing is looking problematic?" I did know this. I'm no expert, but I tinker enough to know what things are starting to go. And they were prepared to explain WHY these things were problematic, too. Not in the know-it-all way, the approachable way. Their vibe was so thoughtful and helpful that I was like... hey man, just take care of me. Their prices in-shop were fair, and within two hours they saved me several days of looking for parts, buying tools, Youtubing through the entire Park Tools playlist... And now? My eccentric little bike's running smoother than it has in a loong time. The parts they swapped in were tailored to MY uses (which involves heavy riding around the suburbs AND winter-riding commuting abuse). I couldn't be happier with the money I spent there. Prices are fair, they're not making up things that need fixing, and they'll tell you the difference between "this might be dangerous" and "this will just be a hassle." If you're not knowledgeable about your wheels, these guys won't stiff you and they won't condescend to you. And know what's the icing on this? I'd initially called out to True Cyclery on Bradley St (as that was the closest bike shop to my work). Karl over THERE replied that he was out of town, and recommended me out to these guys. (So kudos out to True Cyclery, too!) In sum, when these guys write on their website that they're a community center, take 'em seriously. How good of dudes do you have to be that someone who would otherwise be your competitor recommends you to them? And their tunes are kooky and eclectic and lovely. The store's just a great vibe.

I recently visited The Devil's Gear Bike Shop with my daughter after she lost her bike lock key and needed a tune-up. Johnny and his staff greeted us warmly, quickly resolving the lock issue and expertly tuning her bike. Their knowledgeable and personable approach made us feel right at home. I highly recommend them!

Man, I love this bike shop. My partner and I each had work done on our bikes here, and we were blown away by the quality of the work and the prices (in a good way). We'd spent so much time and money trying to fix an issue on her bike to no avail, and John at the Devil's Gear fixed it with no fuss and for a crazy affordable rate. Highly recommended!

Blew out an oddly shaped tire (14x3) and after a failed attempt to change, brought my e-bike into Devil's Gear. John and the crew had me up and running in 30 minutes and fixed a hidden problem on my brakes. Would come back again!
